Turning Recycled Containerboard
Into Cost-Effective, Hygienic Packaging

About Union Corrugated Packaging Industries

Union Corrugated Packaging Industries (UCPI) is a modern corrugated packaging manufacturer established by M.A.H.Y. Khoory Group at KEZAD, Abu Dhabi. Built as a purpose-designed, greenfield and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, UCPI strengthens the Group's corrugated packaging capability alongside National Paper Industry (NPI), combining decades of experience in paper recycling and manufacturing with advanced production technology and customer-focused packaging design.

As part of the Group's integrated paper and packaging value chain, around 80% of the containerboard UCPI converts is supplied by Union Paper Mills (UPM), the Group's recycled paper manufacturer. On an advanced German corrugator, it is combined into high-quality corrugated board, then converted into a versatile range of packaging, including shipping cases, printed cartons, die-cut boxes, trays, wrap-around packaging, retail displays, promotional packaging, e-commerce mailers, partitions and dividers. An in-house packaging design department provides structural design and graphic development, so that each solution is tailored to the product, the brand, its handling, transport and storage, and its intended use.

From its site at KEZAD, between Khalifa Port and the Abu Dhabi–Dubai motorway, UCPI is positioned to serve manufacturers and businesses throughout the UAE and the wider region. Its target industries include fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, poultry and industry, where packaging must deliver reliable product protection, consistent performance and the hygiene standards of the product inside it.

For UCPI, packaging is more than a box: it is an essential part of its customers' supply chains. Its focus is on fit-for-purpose packaging that protects products, enhances their presentation, supports operational efficiency and meets the evolving needs of the industries it serves.

An Integrated Group Ecosystem

Behind NPI's production is an integrated M.A.H.Y. Khoory Group ecosystem. Each stage of the journey is supported by a dedicated Group company or division.

Recovered

The Group's Recyclable Waste Management Division collects recovered paper every day from homes, malls, factories, warehouses and businesses across the UAE, around 37,000 tonnes a month, with Green Arabia contributing a further 2,000 tonnes from its customers. Greenland Transport, the Group's own fleet, delivers the bales to the mills.

Milled

At its mills in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UPM produces around a thousand tonnes of recycled containerboard a day: test liner for the flat faces of corrugated board, and fluting for its corrugated middle layer.

Union Paper Mills
Manufactured

UCPI's packaging design department first specifies each order around the product it must carry, the weight it must bear and the journey it must make.
On the new German corrugator, fluting is bonded between liners to form corrugated board, which is then printed, die-cut and creased to shape.
Finally, the finished packaging is bundled on an automated line and dispatched to the customer.

Union Corrugated Packaging Industries
Returned

Finished packaging is supplied to manufacturers across the UAE, where it is filled, stacked and shipped. Once it has served its purpose, it is recovered by the Group and returned to the mills as a valuable industrial raw material.

Manufacturers across the UAE

Together, these capabilities create a practical circular model: paper recovered in the UAE is transformed into containerboard at the Group's mills, manufactured into corrugated packaging and recovered again once it has served its purpose.

Born in the UAE.
Reborn for UAE industries.

Environmental Responsibility In Practice

This model supports the UAE's ambition to build a more competitive, resource-efficient and sustainable industrial economy. By converting containerboard manufactured in the UAE into packaging for UAE industry, UCPI keeps the complete packaging value chain within the country, in line with the Make it in the Emirates agenda.

Fibre

Recycled containerboard from UPM.

The containerboard supplied by UPM is manufactured from recovered paper, with no reliance on virgin fibre, and is certified FSC Recycled under the mills' chain of custody.

Energy

Natural gas for the boiler and chiller.

The plant's boiler and chiller are fuelled by natural gas, and materials inside the building are handled by electric forklifts, keeping exhaust fumes out of the production hall.

Circularity

Recovered after use.

Once corrugated packaging has served its purpose, it is collected by the Group's Recyclable Waste Management Division and returned to UPM as a valuable industrial raw material.

Water

Production water reused.

An effluent treatment plant on site treats the plant's production water so that it can be reused.

Six Formats of
Corrugated Packaging

UCPI produces corrugated packaging for food and beverage, pharmaceutical, personal care, industrial and e-commerce customers, in six principal formats.

Regular slotted container

Regular Slotted Containers

Shipping and storage

The standard corrugated case, with flaps of equal length, used across every industry for shipping and storage.

Die-cut box with a display window

Die-Cut Boxes

Retail, e-commerce and fresh produce.

Packaging cut to the exact shape of a specific product, for retail presentation and online sales, including wrap-arounds, trays, bottom-lid cases, fruit and vegetable crates and displays.

Double-wall corrugated case

Double-Wall Cases

Heavy, bulk and fragile goods.

Multi-layered cases providing additional strength and protection for heavy or fragile products, from white goods and metal products to granulates. Octabins for bulk materials are planned for the range.

Open corrugated mailer

Corrugated Mailers

E-commerce, courier and food deliveries.

Compact, durable, self-locking boxes, ready to assemble and built for courier dispatches, online retail orders and food delivery services.

Corrugated partitions and dividers

Partitions and Inner Protection

Bottles, glassware and furniture.

Inner grids, buffers and protection sheets that separate and protect individual items within a case or during a move.

Stack of protective corrugated sheets

Protective Sheets

Layer pads and slip sheets

Flat corrugated sheets placed between product layers or beneath palletised goods to protect and stabilise them, and laid to protect surfaces during construction and refurbishment.

Modern Corrugating Technology

The KEZAD facility was designed around corrugated packaging production, with hygiene, safety and consistency specified before construction began.

Printing and Converting

Converting equipment prints in up to five colours, enough to reproduce around 95% of the packaging designs in use worldwide, and a multipoint folder-gluer closes cases with one to six glue points.

Closed Production and Storage

Paper reels and finished goods are stored inside the closed production building and handled by electric forklifts, maintaining the highest standard of hygiene.

Air ducts above the production hall

Controlled Air

The high-ceilinged production hall is fully sealed against dust, sand, insects and rodents and kept under over-pressure, with the air refreshed six to eight times an hour, providing a cleaner environment and a better working climate.

Closed production building raised above a drainage channel

Protection From Flooding

The facility is built on higher ground under a fully closed roof with a dedicated drainage system, protecting materials from water and reducing maintenance.

Sprinkler system on the production hall ceiling

Fire Safety

A complete sprinkler system protects the building, which is insulated with non-combustible Rockwool mineral wool. Unlike synthetic insulation such as PIR, EPS and XPS, it does not spread fire through the walls or roof, and no toxic gases are released from the insulation in the event of fire.

Automated Packing and Secure Delivery

Finished packaging is handled on a fully automated packaging line, supporting hygiene and productivity. Every order is delivered on pallets, strapped and sealed in stretch film, keeping it dust- and water-tight in transit.

“UCPI is vertically integrated with the Group's paper mills at UPM, which will supply the majority of its containerboard. That gives our customers consistent quality and security of supply, and allows us to optimise the balance of paper, board strength and cost for every order.”

Quality Assured at Every Stage

Every order is specified for the performance it must deliver, and every stage of production is controlled to the same standard.

Performance-Based Design

Every enquiry is reviewed by the packaging design department before it is priced. Board grade and construction are specified around the weight the packaging must carry, the journey it must make and the conditions in which it will be stored.

Consistent Raw Material

The majority of the containerboard is supplied by UPM, produced to published specifications and tested in the mills' own laboratories, so board quality begins with consistent paper and a consistent supply.

Hygiene Built Into the Design

The entire facility, including air handling and storage, was built from the ground up to hygiene standards aligned with HACCP requirements, so that hygiene is part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Quotation Within 24 Hours

Most requests for quotation are answered within 24 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the packaging required. The packaging design department sets the board composition for every order around the strength it needs for storage, shipping, handling and distribution.

Warehousing and Daily Supply

Space on site is set aside for future warehousing, so that UCPI can hold customers' finished goods and safety stock, manage their inventory and supply them daily.
